Brazil confirm World Cup bid
Tokyo (dpa) - The Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) officially launched its bid to host the 2014 World Cup Wednesday, presenting FIFA with a letter of intent at the Club World Cup in Japan.
"It will be a unique opportunity for the Brazilian people who deserve to be the hosts," CBF president Ricardo Teixeira, who handed over the letter, told FIFA's website.
South Africa will host the 2010 even with a South American country pencilled in for four years later as part of a new rotation system put in place by football's ruling body.
If no other South American candidate puts forward a bid by the Monday deadline, five-time world champion Brazil will be the single candidate to host the tournament and will be closer to achieving its wish to organize another World Cup. Brazil hosted the event in 1950.
However, FIFA president Joseph Blatter has said that even if Brazil is the only candidate from the region, it can still be denied the tournament if it fails to comply with the organization's strict requirements.
"This is very important not only for Brazilian football and our people but also for South America," said the CBF boss.
Argentina was the last country from the region to host the event back in 1978.
"That means that in 2014 it will be 36 years since the World Cup was last held in our continent," said Teixeira.
