Choi leads at Hong Kong Open
K.J. Choi shot an eight-under-par 62 Thursday and owned a one-stroke lead after one round of the Hong Kong Open golf tournament.
The players took advantage of ideal weather conditions at the Hong Kong Golf Club with 63 of them breaking par. Garry Houston was in second place at seven-under 65 while Fredrik Andersson Hed and Robert Karlsson were tied at six-under.
Choi started strong with three consecutive birdies in his first four holes but made the turn at two-under after a bogey at No. 9.
He got that stroke back at No. 10 and, after a par at 11, and put together a string of five consecutive birdies. He put an iron shot within 2 feet of the hole on 14 and sank putts of 15 and 25 feet on Nos. 15 and 16 to get within one of the course record. He parred out for the first-round lead.
Houston, who played the back nine first Thursday, got as low as eight-under when he made birdie putts on Nos. 6 and 7 but he three-putted No. 9 for a bogey and settled in second place.
