Chopra finishes off first PGA victory
Daniel Chopra used a birdie at No. 16 Monday to seal his first PGA victory, winning the weather-delayed Ginn sur Mer Classic tournament in Florida.
Chopra finished his fourth round at two-under-par 71 and was 19-under 273 for the tournament. Shigeki Maruyama and Fredrick Jacobson tied for second one shot back while Dicky Pride, with a final round nine-under 64 on Sunday, ended up 16-under and in fourth place for the tournament.
Weather-related delays and suspensions earlier in the tournament led to six golfers still on the course when play was stopped Sunday. They finished their rounds early Monday.
Chopra, Maruyama and Jacobson were tied with three holes to play but only Chopra was able to get a birdie in 16 and all three players parred 17 and 18.
Chopra made it interesting though. He lost a four-stroke lead during Sunday's play and hit his drive on the par 5 16th into the rough. However, his third shot stopped 9 feet form the hole and he knocked that birdie putt home to take the outright lead.
On the par 3 17th, he two-putted from more than 50 feet away and on 18 found a fairway bunker. But his second shot found the green and he was able to two putt to win the tournament. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
