Federer reaches third round in Paris
Roger Federer, who has wrapped up the world No. 1 ranking for the fourth straight year, battled past Ivo Karlovic at the Paris Masters Wednesday.
It was the second straight outstanding match between them, Federer having survived in two tiebreaks at last week's Swiss Indoors semifinals. In this one, Federer fought off Karlovic, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Second-seeded Rafael Nadal also advanced with a 6-3, 6-1, decision over Filippo Volandri, while James Blake moved on with a marathon victory over Nicolas Mahut, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
Other second-round winners included Nikolay Davydenko, Fabrice Santoro, Marcos Baghdatis, Stanislas Wawrinka and David Nalbandian.
