Former world champion Mukhina dies at 46
Moscow (dpa) - Former Soviet Union gymnastics star Elena Mukhina, a 1978 world champion and four-time European champion, has died at the age of 46, it was reported in Moscow Tuesday.
Mukhina, who was a quadriplegic after an accident in training ahead of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, died on December 22.
She had been the star of the 1978 world championships in Strasbourg, France, when she won the all-round gold, beating Olympic Champions Nadia Comaneci and Nellie Kim among others.
She also tied for the gold medal in the floor exercise event final, as well as winning the silver in balance beam and uneven bars. // © 2006 DPA
