MLS: Los Angeles 1, New York 0
Landon Donovan scored on a penalty kick Saturday and the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the New York Red Bulls for their first win of the 2009 MLS season.
The victory allowed the Galaxy (1-1-4) to leapfrog out of the Western Conference cellar into fifth place ahead of Houston, San Jose and FC Dallas.
New York (1-5-2) is mired at the bottom of the East, tied with Columbus.
Donovan's goal -- his fourth of the season -- came in the 39th minute after the Red Bulls' Seth Stammler was called for a handball in the penalty area.
