Nadal, Davydenko out at Australian Open

MELBOURNE, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- No. 2 seeded Rafael Nadal and third-seeded Nikolay Davydenko were both ousted Wednesday from the Australian Open.

Nadal was swept out of the year's first Grand slam event in straight sets by 10th-seeded Fernando Gonzalez and Davydenko was eliminated by 12th-seeded Tommy Haas in five sets, including a final set that went 12 games.

The upsets put Gonzalez and Haas against each other in the Australian Open semifinals Friday while world No. 1 Roger Federer faces sixth-seeded Andy Roddick Thursday in the other.

Gonzalez blitzed Nadal with 41 winners, including 10 aces to gain his first Grand Slam semifinal berth. His 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 victory marked the third time in four meetings he'd beaten Nadal.

Haas won 6-3, 2-6, 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 after saving one match point at 5-4. He broke Davydenko's serve in the next game to regain momentum in the 3-hour, 19-minute match and moved into his third Australian semifinals. He advanced to the semis in 1999 and 2002. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
