Record 79.5M see major league games
Major League Baseball, led by the New York Yankees drawing 4.2 million fans, set an attendance record of 79.5 million in 2007.
Baseball's official attendance for the regular season was 79,502,524, for an average of 32,785 per game. This past season marked the fourth consecutive year baseball set an attendance record.
Officials said tight races and a turnover of playoff teams -- only one of the eight playoff teams from 2006 made it back to post-season play -- kept interest high.
The one team that made it back to the playoffs was the Yankees, who set an American League record with a total attendance of 4,271,083 -- an average of 52,729 a game at Yankee Stadium. They were among eight teams that set attendance records.
Major League Baseball also said five of the top 15 single-day attendance marks were established in 2007, including the top all-time day. On July 28 a record total of 717,478 fans were in attendance at the 17 games that day.
The release from Major League Baseball also said minor league baseball set a record with an attendance of more than 42.8 million in 2007. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
