U.S. joins disabled-bias suit against UM
The U.S. Justice Department has joined a suit claiming the University of Michigan does not have enough handicapped-accessible seats at its football stadium
A federal judge granted the department's request to join the suit Wednesday and opened the way for an inspection by U.S. officials of Michigan Stadium before a $226 million renovation project, The Detroit News reported Thursday.
Federal architects were expected to begin the inspection Tuesday, taking measurements and photographs of alleged violations of federal handicapped-accessibility laws before demolition takes place, the report said. The inspection is expected take five days.
The university did not oppose Justice Department involvement.
The department wants to force the university to provide more wheelchair seating spaces at the stadium -- which now only provides 88 such spaces in the 107,000-seat facility, far less than the 1 percent U.S. law requires, the report said. The university has proposed upping the spaces to 592 by 2010.
The suit was brought by the Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America under the Americans with Disabilities Act. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
