UPI NewsTrack SportsBERLIN, May 9 (UPI) -- Dinara Safina pulled off her second major upset in two days with a victory Friday over Serena Williams at the $1.34 million German Open. Safina, seeded 13th this week, earned a quarterfinals shot at Williams with a win over world No. 1 Justine Henin. Williams had a 21-1 record this year and hadn't lost since January. Friday started as through the string would continue, with the fifth-seeded Williams winning the first set 6-2. But Safina roared back for a 6-1 second set win and took a third-set tiebreak 7-5. Her next opponent will be Victoria Azarenka, who upset 15th-seeded Alona Bondarenko 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 to make Saturday's semifinals. The other semifinal hasn't been decided because Friday's match between second-seeded Ana Ivanovic and No. 10-seeded Agnes Szavay was suspended because of darkness. Ivanovic, the tournament's defending champion, dropped the first set but won the second, leaving the match at 3-6, 6-4 with the third set coming Saturday. The winner of that match draws seventh-seeded Elena Dementieva in the semifinals. Dementieva was a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 winner over fourth-seeded Jelena Jankovic. OTTAWA, May 9 (UPI) -- The Royal Canadian Mounted Police will spend $1.5 million to rent an entire Vancouver hotel for security for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Gursharn Bernier said a deal is in the works with the Blue Horizon Hotel to book all 214 rooms and parking to accommodate officers from late January to March of 2010, the Globe and Mail reported Friday. While the hotel would provide 300 beds, the force is still looking into acquiring more space for the Games' Integrated Security Unit composed of RCMP, military and local police officials, the report said. At least 5,000 more beds are required and the ISU has called for bids for accommodation on a cruise ship in Vancouver harbor, with an estimated cost of $5 million. Bernier said the plan is to have several concentrations of security forces in the city.
MILAN, Italy, May 9 (UPI) -- Robert Karlsson set a course record with an 11-under-par 61 Friday and owns a 2-stroke lead halfway through the Methorios Capital Italian Open. Karlsson had a pair of eagles en route to breaking the record at Castello di Tolcinasco Golf and Country Club and is at 15-under 129 after 36 holes of the tournament. Hennie Otto and Mark Foster are tied for second at 13-under 131 while Estanislao Goya and Andres Hansen were in fourth at 11-under. Karlsson, playing the back nine first Friday, opened with three consecutive birdies but gave a stroke back at the par-4 13th hole after hitting his drive into the water. He responded two holes later with his first eagle of the day to get to 4-under for the round. After three pars, Karlsson put together a 29 for the front side, starting with an eagle at No. 1. He parred No. 2 but had four birdies in the next five holes. Counting par 3s at Nos. 5 and 8, Karlsson's card showed six consecutive 3s. He finished with a birdie 4 for his 61, one stroke better than the course mark. WASHINGTON, May 9 (UPI) -- Goalie Olaf Kolzig is ending his 17-year association with the NHL's Washington Capitals. The pending free agent and Washington's longest-tenured professional athlete told The Washington Post that he's known for some time his presence on the team was no longer needed.
He told the Post he knew his career in Washington was over April 22 with the 4-3 loss to Philadelphia, which was Game 7 in the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. On March 19, when Washington suffered a 5-0 loss at Chicago, it was Kolzig's 711th game with the Capitals. He did not start another game as the Washington coaching staff turned to Cristobal Huet for the rest of the regular season -- the Capitals won their final seven regular-season game and took the Southeast Division title, and the playoffs. He told the Post he's in the process of selling his Maryland home and says he'd like to join an NHL title contender next season. Publication date: 10 May 2008 Archive
