MLB: St. Louis 5, Pittsburgh 1

Todd Wellemeyer gave up a run in seven-plus innings Wednesday and was supported by 15 hits, lifting St. Louis to a 5-1 win over Pittsburgh.

The Pirates lost for only the second time in nine games.

Wellemeyer (4-1) gave up two singles with three walks and struck out five. The Cardinals halted a three-game losing streak.

Troy Glaus and Cesar Izturis both had three hits and an RBI for the Cardinals, who produced two sacrifice flies in the sixth inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Paul Maholm (2-4) gave up 11 hits and four runs in six innings to take the loss.

Prior to the game, the Pirates placed catcher Ryan Doumit on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left thumb.
