Boston obtains outfielder Mark Kotsay

The Boston Red Sox traded for Atlanta's Mark Kotsay on Wednesday to bolster their injury-depleted and non-productive outfield.

Boston parted with minor league outfield prospect Luis Sumoza.

Kotsay, in his 12th season, is hitting .289 with six homers and 37 RBI in 318 at-bats this season with a .340 on-base percentage.

He will replace J.D. Drew, placed on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday with ongoing back stiffness in his back and a herniated disc.

To be with the Red Sox will be cool, Kotsay said on the Red Sox Web site. I've always there were a couple of teams I'd like to play for, with Atlanta being one of them, but I'm looking forward to joining the Red Sox and being in the pennant race.

He hopes to arrive in New York for Wednesday's game against the Yankees.

Coco Crisp is struggling with a .263 average in 293 at-bats and has dropped to the bottom of Boston's batting order.
