High men's seeds advance at U.S. Open

Three high men's seeds won their second-round matches Thursday at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Spain's David Ferrer, the fourth seed, topped German Andreas Beck 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5); sixth-seeded Brit Andy Murray downed Frenchman Michael Llodra 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7); and No. 9 James Blake of the United States was leading Steve Darcis 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 when the Belgian retired with an undisclosed injury.

Murray has never advanced beyond the event's fourth round. The 28-year-old Blake, a Yonkers, N.Y., native, reached the quarterfinals in 2005 and 2006. Ferrer was a 2007 U.S. Open semifinalist.

Another winner Thursday was No. 7 David Nalbandian of Argentina.
