When a man was playing in the yard with his toddler son then he saw 6-foot-long Nile Monitor (lizard).

Ryan Nelson said “he thought it was a crocodile when he first spotted the Nile monitor by the rose bushes. What I thought at first was an alligator, wasn’t expecting anything like that in my yard.”

Nelson and his wife started making phone calls when they finally came across MB Reptiles, a Grants Pass pet store.

Nelson says the monitor belongs to a neighbor.

Nelson wrestled the lizard and was able to contain it in a metal dog cage with the help of a local reptile pet store owner. Local police don’t have reports that someone is missing the lizard, and it has been put on display at the pet store.

Nile monitors grow to about 1.5 to 2 meters (4.5 to 6.5 feet) in length. They have muscular bodies, strong legs and powerful jaws. The teeth are sharp and pointed in juvenile animals and become blunt and peg-like in adults. They also possess sharp claws used for climbing, digging, defense, or tearing at their prey. Like all monitors they have a forked tongue, with highly developed olfactory properties.
