UPI NewsTrack SportsATLANTA, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Anthony Kim maintained his lead after two rounds of the Tour Championship in Atlanta Friday and set up a Saturday pairing with his current No. 1 rival. Kim shot a 1-under 69 at the East Lake Country Club to finish 36 holes of the final PGA Tour playoff event at 7-under 133. That put him two shots in front of Sergio Garcia, who Kim defeated Sunday in the opening singles match of the Ryder Cup. Garcia shot a 65 Friday for a 135 total.
Phil Mickelson, who partnered with Kim in three matches during the American Ryder Cup victory, was alone in third at 136 and Camilo Villegas was fourth at 138. The only other players under par were K.J. Choi and Mike Weir at 139. The Tour Championship was supposed to determine the winner of the FedEx Cup and its $10 million top prize, but Vijay Singh wrapped up that honor by winning two of the previous three playoff tournaments. Singh, needing only to complete all four rounds to clinch the FedEx title, was tied for 23rd in the 30-player field at 147. KANSAS CITY, Kan., Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Jimmie Johnson had the second-fastest car in Friday's Sprint Cup qualifying but still won the pole for Sunday's race. Juan Pablo Montoya turned in a qualifying lap of 172.150 mph at the Kansas Speedway, but his car failed post-qualifying inspection, so Johnson was declared the pole-winner for the Camping World RV 400, the third race in NASCAR's 10-race playoffs. Montoya will start 42nd in the 43-car field.
Johnson, the two-time defending series champion, is currently 10 points behind leader Carl Edwards. Mark Martin will start on the outside of the first row. Matt Kenseth and Elliott Sadler will start on the second row. HOUSTON, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- The Houston Texans announced Friday they will play their NFL home opener Sunday, Oct. 5, against the Indianapolis Colts at weather-damaged Reliant Stadium. Five roof panels in the roof were damaged by the winds of Hurricane Ike Sept. 13. An independent inspection, conducted by insurance adjusters and architects, has determined the stadium suffered no structural damage. The Texans were originally scheduled to meet Baltimore Sept. 14, but that game was moved to Nov. 9.
NEW YORK, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Starting quarterbacks, including the New York Jets' Brett Favre, were prominent on the weekly injury list released by the NFL Friday. Favre has had limited his practice time this week for Sunday's contest against the Arizona Cardinals after he rolled his left ankle early in the third quarter of Monday night's 48-29 loss to the San Diego Chargers. His status for the Arizona game is questionable, putting his record 256 consecutive starts streak in jeopardy. Cincinnati's Carson Palmer is questionable for the contest against the Cleveland Browns because of an ailing right elbow. Tennessee quarterback Vince Young will not play against the Minnesota Vikings because of knee and hamstring ailments. Washington defensive end Jason Taylor will miss the Dallas Cowboys game because of surgery on his left calf and Chicago Bears kick returner Devin Hester (ribs) is questionable for Monday night's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
