The Detroit City Council gave what is left of Tiger Stadium a stay of execution Tuesday, postponing demolition at least until the end of the week.

By a 5-3 vote, the council refused to authorize immediate demolition by the Detroit Economic Growth Corp., The Detroit News reported.

The Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy hopes to save the diamond and a small portion of the ballpark structure. The group needs to raise $219,000 more to make preservation a practical possibility.

Councilwoman Martha Reeves, who voted for postponing the demolition, said the city stands to lose more than it would save by immediately removing the rest of the stadium. The demolition crew will have to be called back, adding to the cost.

We still have history that will be lost if it's completely demolished, Reeves said.
