Sports agent charged in Alabama

The owner of a Virginia sports management company has been charged with participating in an effort to recruit an injured college player in his hospital room.

Raymond Lee Savage Jr. was arrested last week at the Savage Sports Management office in Newport News, the Newport News Daily Press reported Tuesday. He faces charges in Alabama of failing to register as an agent and contacting a student athlete.

A Savage employee, Jason Goggins, was charged in 2006. He allegedly went to see Tyrone Prothro in 2005 after the University of Alabama wide receiver broke his leg in three places.

Donald Valeska II, an Alabama prosecutor, charged that Savage arranged Goggins' visit to the hospital.

Valeska said a judge in Newport News told Savage he could either travel to Alabama at his own expense to answer the charges or be taken there as a prisoner. Savage chose the first alternative, and Valeska said he will face arrest if he does not appear.
