Davydenko, who has won three of the last four Kremlin Cup titles, routed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1, 6-1 in 55 minutes. Davydenko won 90 percent of the points when he got his first serve in in winning a quarterfinals berth. Seventh-seeded Marat Safin also advanced, taking out Julien Benneteau, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, at the indoor tournament. Safin managed just seven points in the second set but didn't have his serve broken in the other two sets. Also Thursday, Paul-Henri Mathieu, last year's Kremlin Cup runner-up, beat Dudi Sela, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 7-6 (7-0); Viktor Troicki upset eighth-seeded Viktor Troicki, 6-3, 6-4; Mischa Zverev topped Teimuraz Gabashvili, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1; and Igor Kunitsyn swept past Robby Ginepri, 6-4, 6-3. Broadhurst, Marcus Fraser, and Magnus A. Carlsson all shot 4-under-par 67 at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid golf course.
Broadhurst had bogeys at 5 and 6 but countered those with six birdies. Carlsson had an early bogey but also had an eagle 2 at No. 15 and three birdies for his 67. Fraser had a relatively calm round of four birdies and 14 pars. A group of five players, led by James Kamte, is at 3-under 68 and share fourth place, with 15 others at 2-under 69. Two-time Madrid Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal shot 1-under 70, and is tied for 24th place. PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Takashi Saito, who was the Los Angeles Dodgers' closer until he was injured in July, was left off the team's NL Championship Series submitted Thursday. The Dodgers replaced Saito with left-handed reliever Kuo Hong-chih when they handed in their 25-player roster ahead of Game 1 of the NL Championship Series, which begins Thursday in Philadelphia. Jonathan Broxton is expected to continue as the Los Angeles closer. Saito suffered a sprained ligament in his right elbow in July and didn't return to the Dodgers' active roster until the final two weeks of the regular season. He struggled in his only appearance the Dodgers Division Series with the Chicago Cubs, allowing two runs and three hits while not recording an out. Kuo has also been injured, suffering soreness in his triceps, and wasn't on the Dodgers' NLDS roster. He was 5-3 during the regular season, with a 2.14 earned run average in 42 appearances. MOSCOW, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic rallied Thursday to claim a second-round victory at the $1.34 million Kremlin Cup tennis tournament in Moscow. Pennetta was a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 winner over Ekaterina Makarova in her second-round match Thursday. No. 7-seeded Vera Zvonareva routed Daniela Hantuchova, 6-1, 6-0, and Nadia Petrova advanced after leading 6-4, 3-2 when Carolina Wozniacki withdrew due to a respiratory illness in other Thursday pairings. WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Doctors say Washington Wizards center Brendan Haywood needs surgery on his right wrist that will cause him to miss up to six months of the NBA schedule. Haywood was injured Oct. 2 during a training camp practice. Initially, team officials thought Haywood suffered a sprain but after seeing two hand specialists Wednesday, it was determined that the wrist had a torn ligament that could be treated through surgery.
Grunfeld didn't discuss a timetable for Haywood's return but surgery likely will force him to miss the entire 2008-09 season. The eight-year veteran averaged a career-high 10.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest last season while playing in 80 of 82 games. Another starter, star guard Gilbert Arenas, is out until at least December following recent left knee surgery. Publication date: 10 October 2008 Archive
